A multi-gift pass works like a prepaid wallet accepted at dozens of different stores. Unlike a traditional gift card linked to a single store, it allows you to choose the shop, the department, and sometimes even the channel (online or in-store). However, you need to know how to use it at the right time, in the right place, and with the right method to avoid letting any balance go unused.

Check the balance and expiration date before each shopping session

Have you ever found an expired gift card at the bottom of a drawer? This is the most common trap with a multi-gift pass. Before entering a store, a quick check can prevent an unpleasant surprise at the checkout.

Most issuers offer an online space or a mobile app that displays the remaining balance and the expiration date in real-time. Take thirty seconds to check these two pieces of information. They dictate the rest of your shopping session.

If the expiration date is approaching, focus your purchases on a single outing rather than splitting them up. A residual balance of a few euros left on an expired pass is money lost. Some providers allow a transfer of the balance to an e-card or a complementary voucher: check directly on the issuer’s website before it’s too late.

Knowing how to use a multi-gift pass for shopping starts with this control reflex. Without it, all the following tips lose their usefulness.

Combine multi-gift pass and in-store promotions

A multi-gift pass does not cancel out regular discounts. The two can be combined in the vast majority of partner stores, and that’s where the savings become real.

Spot sales periods and private sales

During winter sales, summer sales, or events like Black Friday, prices drop. Paying for a discounted item with a pass means doubling the savings: the store’s discount applies to the displayed price, and the pass covers the remaining amount without additional fees.

Also, think about private sales offered by some partner stores. These offers are often reserved for loyalty cardholders. There’s nothing stopping you from combining a loyalty card, current discounts, and payment by multi-gift pass.

Take advantage of loyalty programs in parallel

A point often overlooked: paying for a purchase with a multi-gift pass does not eliminate the accumulation of loyalty points in most stores. In practice, you pay with your pass, accumulate points, and these points generate future discount vouchers.

However, check at the checkout that the terminal properly registers the loyalty card before presenting the pass. The scanning order matters in some systems.

Distribute the balance between online and in-store purchases

The French gift card market has exceeded 8 billion euros, with an increase of over 13% in 2024. This growth has prompted issuers to multiply hybrid formats: physical cards, e-cards, and mobile apps usable both on websites and in stores.

This flexibility changes how to plan a shopping session. For example, you can:

  • Order a product online from a partner store to take advantage of a wider stock, then use the remaining balance in-store for another purchase the same day.
  • Reserve an item via a store’s click and collect service and pay on-site with the pass, ensuring availability without blocking the entire balance.
  • Switch to an e-card if your physical pass is about to expire, to keep the credit longer on a digital medium (when allowed by the issuer).

Alternating between online and physical stores allows access to a much broader catalog of stores than limiting yourself to a single purchasing mode.

URSSAF ceiling and gift pass offered by the CSE

If your multi-gift pass comes from your social and economic committee, a fiscal framework applies. A decree at the end of 2025 raised the monthly ceiling of Social Security to 4,005 euros as of January 1, 2026. The URSSAF tolerance for the exemption of vouchers and gift cards is set at 5% of this amount, or about 200 euros per event.

Below this threshold, the pass is exempt from social charges for the employer and non-taxable for the employee. Beyond that, the exemption remains possible if three conditions are met:

  • The pass is awarded in connection with a recognized URSSAF event (Christmas, back-to-school, birth, marriage, etc.).
  • Its use is consistent with this event (a pass intended for back-to-school focused on supply stores, for example).
  • The amount does not exceed the 5% threshold of the monthly ceiling per event and per calendar year.

This information determines the real value of your pass. A pass received as part of a URSSAF event is a net benefit, provided it is used within the deadlines and for the intended type of product.

Avoid traps that reduce the value of your multi-gift pass

Some common mistakes turn a good plan into poorly optimized spending.

The first: buying an item just to “empty” the pass. A forced purchase remains an unnecessary expense, even if paid with a gifted credit. It’s better to give the remaining balance to someone else if no product genuinely interests you.

The second: ignoring exclusions. Some partner stores exclude specific departments or brands. Apple products, gaming consoles, or gift cards from other issuers are often out of scope. Check the list of exclusions on the issuer’s website before you go.

The third: splitting the balance into micro-purchases. Each transaction takes time and sometimes incurs management fees depending on the medium. Grouping your purchases into one or two sessions remains the most effective method to utilize the entire amount.

A well-used multi-gift pass covers thoughtful purchases, combined with promotions, on the most suitable channel for each product. The reflex to maintain: check the balance, spot current offers, and spend before the deadline.
