You have just decided to give your car to a relative, without any financial compensation. The gesture is simple, but the accompanying administrative procedure is less so if you don’t know where to start. The transfer of a vehicle for free follows the same steps as a classic sale, with one detail: no price appears on the transfer certificate. Here’s how to proceed without wasting time or money.
Free transfer certificate: what the Cerfa 15776 really requires
The central document for any transfer, whether paid or free, remains the Cerfa form 15776*02. It is filled out in two parts: one for the former owner, one for the new owner. In the case of a gift, the “sale price” box remains empty or states “transfer for free”.
This form has no cost. It can be downloaded from the public service website or generated directly during the online procedure on the ANTS. Be careful: some intermediary sites charge fees to fill out this same document. These fees do not correspond to any state tax; they compensate for an optional service that you can very well do yourself.
Before completing the Cerfa, make sure you have the confidential code associated with the registration certificate. This code is found on the letter received during the last registration. Without it, the online declaration will be blocked if a third party acts on your behalf.
To fully understand the steps for a free vehicle transfer, keep in mind that the administrative process does not distinguish between a gift and a sale: only the amount and intention change.
Online transfer declaration on the ANTS or Simplimmat
Since the complete digitization of registration procedures, everything is done online. Two official channels coexist to register your transfer.
The ANTS website
The National Agency for Secure Titles offers the online procedure “Sell or give my vehicle”. You log in via FranceConnect, enter the vehicle and new owner information, and then validate. At the end, a transfer code is generated automatically. This code must be transmitted to the recipient of the gift: it will be required for them to make their own registration request.
The Simplimmat application
Simplimmat allows you to do everything from a smartphone, without going through the classic ANTS interface. The application generates the declaration and transfer code in a few minutes, for free. It’s the fastest option if you have your registration certificate and the administrative situation certificate at hand.
Whichever channel you choose, you must also physically hand over to the new owner:
- The original registration certificate, crossed out and stating “transferred on” followed by the date, time, and your signature
- The administrative situation certificate (formerly known as the non-pledge certificate), downloadable for free from the Histovec website
- A proof of technical inspection less than six months old if the vehicle is over four years old
Technical inspection and non-pledge certificate before the transfer
You are giving your car to your son or a friend. The vehicle is still running, it is over four years old: a valid technical inspection is mandatory, even for a gift. The report must be less than six months old at the time of the transfer (or less than two months if a follow-up inspection was prescribed).
The administrative situation certificate proves that the vehicle is not subject to any pledge or opposition. It can be retrieved in seconds via Histovec, the service of the Ministry of the Interior. Without this document, the new owner will not be able to obtain their registration certificate.
A common oversight: not crossing out the registration certificate on the day of the transfer. This handwritten mention protects the former owner. If the new owner commits an offense or has an accident before changing the ownership, the crossed-out and dated registration certificate proves that you are no longer responsible.
Transfer for destruction or solidarity donation: two cost-free alternatives
Your vehicle no longer runs and no one wants it? Two options exist, both at no cost.
The first is the transfer for destruction. By going through an approved VHU (end-of-life vehicle) center or an approved scrap dealer, the removal and towing can be completely free. The declaration of transfer for destruction is also done on the ANTS, with a slightly different form.
The second concerns the solidarity donation. Several solidarity garages accept vehicles donated by individuals. They restore them and then offer them at a reduced price to people in difficulty. In return, the donor receives a tax receipt entitling them to a tax reduction. This mechanism turns a vehicle you no longer need into a concrete tax advantage.

- Solidarity donation: handing over the vehicle to an associative garage, tax receipt for the donor
- In both cases, no tax or administrative fees if the process is done directly online
Declaration deadline and responsibility of the former owner
Once the vehicle is handed over to the new owner, you have fifteen days to register the transfer online on the ANTS or via Simplimmat. This deadline is not indicative. Exceeding fifteen days exposes you to complications if the beneficiary accumulates fines or causes damage with the vehicle still in your name.
The new owner, for their part, must initiate their registration request within a month following the transfer. As long as this formality is not completed, they will be driving with a transfer coupon that serves as a temporary title.
Making the declaration on the same day as the gift remains the best habit to adopt. The online procedure takes less than ten minutes, costs nothing, and releases you from any responsibility related to the vehicle as soon as it is validated.
